Listed town houses
High Street, Tarrant Street, Maltravers Street. Thick walls, deep reveals and consent to consider before anything is fixed.

West Sussex
A town where the streets are steep, the houses are old and the conservation area covers most of it. Very little in Arundel accepts a standard kitchen.
Arundel · West Sussex
Arundel is small, beautiful and almost entirely unsuited to off-the-shelf cabinetry. The town climbs steeply from the Arun to the castle, and the houses climb with it — which means floors that step, staircases that turn tightly, and ground levels that change between the front and back of the same building.
Most of the town centre sits within a conservation area, and a good number of properties on the High Street, Tarrant Street and Maltravers Street are listed. Kitchens in these houses tend to be small rooms with thick walls, deep window reveals and beams in inconvenient places. They also tend to be genuinely lovely rooms once the cabinetry is made to fit them rather than squeezed into them.
Out of town, the Arun valley and the villages towards Burpham, Slindon and Amberley have flint cottages and farmhouses with the same characteristics on a larger scale: low ceilings, uneven walls and generous floor areas.
Arundel is twenty minutes from the Worthing workshop, so surveys, fitting and painting are all straightforward to schedule — including the return visits that a fussy old building usually needs.
Local housing
High Street, Tarrant Street, Maltravers Street. Thick walls, deep reveals and consent to consider before anything is fixed.
Built into the hill, so floor levels change within a single storey. Plinths and worktops set out from a datum, not from the floor.
Burpham, Slindon, South Stoke. Low ceilings and irregular walls, every unit scribed.
Amberley, Bury, North Stoke. Big rooms for a range recess, a pantry and a proper island.
Why local matters
Every kitchen is cut and assembled on one bench in Worthing and installed by the same pair of hands. No subcontracted fitters, no franchise, no handover between a designer who sold it and a fitter who has never seen the drawings.
Ollie surveys, quotes, makes, fits and paints. If something needs adjusting in two years, you ring him directly.
Yours is not queued behind three others, and nobody disappears halfway through to start somebody else's job.
Itemised cabinet by cabinet before anything is ordered, so you can see exactly what each element costs.
Plus £1m public liability cover for the whole time work is happening at your property.

Local answers
Fitting freestanding or removable cabinetry generally does not require listed building consent, but altering historic fabric — moving a wall, cutting into original panelling, changing windows — usually does. Speak to Arun District Council's conservation team early. Ollie will design the kitchen around whatever is agreed.
Worktops are set from a level datum line rather than measured up from the floor, and plinths are scribed to follow whatever the floor actually does. The result is a worktop that is genuinely level and a plinth that follows the room — which is far better than the reverse.
Yes. Skirting and architrave profiles can be copied from originals, bead details matched, and paint colours chosen to sit with existing woodwork. In a period house that continuity is what stops a new kitchen looking bolted on.
